TMost of the conversations that have genuinely changed how you see something did not announce themselves in advance. They happened in the margins of other things, at the end of a dinner when everyone else had left, on a drive that was supposed to be about something else, in a moment when neither person was prepared to say or hear something significant but the conditions were right and it happened anyway. The planned conversations, the ones scheduled and prepared for, serve their purpose. But the unplanned ones are often where the real movement occurs.
This is worth paying attention to because it suggests something about the conditions under which genuine exchange becomes possible. Depth in conversation tends to require a kind of unguardedness that is hard to bring to a scheduled interaction and easier to find when the conversation started as something else entirely and wandered somewhere neither person expected. The defenses are lower. The agenda is absent. Something true can surface because nobody was managing the outcome.
What this means practically is less about scheduling better conversations and more about creating more of the conditions in which the unplanned ones can happen. Time without an agenda. Meals without phones. Moments of genuine presence with people who matter, where neither person is performing or producing or moving toward the next thing. The conversation that changes something cannot be engineered, but the environment in which it becomes possible can be cultivated.
The most important things said between people are rarely what was on the agenda.
When was the last time a conversation surprised you by going somewhere genuinely meaningful?
